Here is the exact definition of a Niche from Kyle, (Founder of Wealthy Affiliate)

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an “audience”.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche, music, sports, gyms, fashion, foods, travel, home decors and a lot more is a niche and there are no wrong niche.

There are millions of niches out there and every single niche is profitable because there are millions of people around the world searching for information and solution for a specific niche and would spend thousands buying a product.

Looking for the right Niche is the scariest and troublesome for beginner affiliate marketers. I had the same experience when I am starting to look for the right niche for my website.

It took me 3 days before I found out what niche would be the best for me but I tell you this, it is pretty easy to look for the right niche and that is why I am here to help you find the right niche for you. Let’s now jump on How to pick a Niche for Affiliate Marketing.

Your Passion? Your Niche!

Sample passion niche

Have you ever tried doing something that you don’t want to do? What did you feel or what happen? I still remember clearly when I was still choosing a degree to take if I go to college. I chose to pursue my passion about music but there was advice from my family to take a certain degree that would have a good salary so I took that course. It was chaos. I am not having fun at all. So what I did was I dropped out from the school and pursue my music career.

Same concept is applied when choosing a niche. Your passion is the most profitable niche that you will have. Follow what you love to do and I can assure you that you will enjoy doing it.

What if you have a multiple passion? You love basketball, playing music, Gaming, Cooking, and a lot more? No Problem! It means that you have a lot of niches to choose but I recommend that when starting an affiliate marketing business, you should only focus on a niche that you are really passionate.

The reason when having a multiple niche website is it will slow down your work. One niche website is already have a lot of work to do from building your website, Writing an article for your content and a lot more. When the time comes that you are confident enough then you can build another niche website that you are passionate.

Your Niche Should be Profitable

First – Find a profitable product of your niche from Affiliate Networks. Let us use Amazon.com as an example. If you go to Amazon.com there are tons products that you can find. Almost everything you need are there. Let Us say I have a niche about guitars and I would like to promote a guitar product from Amazon to my website.

I saw a guitar worth $50 and the other one is $400. I promoted both of them. Now the question is how much money I made from these products? The higher the price on affiliate networks, the higher your commission will be.

By the way just for your information, If you are an Amazon Associate, you will get a 6% to 12% commission for every sale that you make. If your niche have a lot of products in amazon but the price is cheaper than the food that you bought from a fast food chain then you might want to change your niche.

Second – Your very goal is to earn money from your niche and I said earlier that there are no wrong in choosing a niche. Yes that’s a fact! Almost every single niche is profitable but the question is how much money you would make on your chosen niche? Here is an example. I have two niche websites. Phones/gadget website and garage tools website.

The question is, How much money it would make? How many people using phones and gadgets and how many people are using tools? You probably got my point. Almost every single person walking around the earth is using a cellphone and 1 out of 10 people have tools.

You can earn money from both websites but you probably gonna earn more from the phones and gadget websites rather than the garage tools website.

Targeting A Very Specific Niche

It is very important to target a very specific niche because people wanted fast results. If your niche is about Guitars (Broad) then you have to narrow it down. Your very goal is to provide information and solution to people. For example if you are looking for guitars on Google search box what would you enter? Do you just enter “Guitar” or will you enter “What are the most suitable guitars for beginners?” Yes people are typing very specific niche keywords in Google if they are searching for information.

I tried to type “Guitar Chords” in google search box and these are the results that people are looking.

These results are still Broad and you can still narrow it down to:

  • Guitar Chords for beginners
  • Guitar Chords chart easy steps
  • Guitar Chords and lyrics for kids
  • Guitar Chords tutorial with charts

Your goal if you have a niche website is to narrow down your niche and be very specific on your niche keyword. The good thing on having a very specific niche is you have lesser competition rather than choosing a broad niche that there are too much competition

Lastly, Write a detailed Content

Again, your goal is to help people gather information and giving them a solution. If your website is just full of affiliate links without your personal review then you are not doing an Affiliate Marketing.

Information – Would you buy a TV in the mall without any details or information and all you can see is the price? Not for sure. Same thing goes to your Website. If you have a niche about Guitar chords and scales you should be writing information like:

  • Tutorials – Steps on how to play a specific chord or scales, or any other skills that you want your audience to learn
  • Discussion – You should be able to write a discussion like what are the best thing to know about guitars or to learn for beginners. What are the best guitars in the market now.
  • Reviews – You should be able to do a review on a specific guitar product and should be very detailed.

Solution – People are not only looking for information and a lot of them are in the internet looking for a solution. All your reviews, discussions and tutorials are useless without giving them a solution. Always remember that you have a business online and your focus is to earn commissions. The solution will be adding an affiliate link to your content.

Here is an example of an Affiliate link:

When you click on that link it will redirect you on Affiliate networks that is associated on that website.

You give information, you provide a solution, you earn a commission.

  1. Hello Ford Juan. This is an interesting article. Choosing a niche must be well-thought-of, particularly if you are into affiliate marketing. I know you have to choose a niche that you are most passionate about so you can write about it efficiently. But, I’m also would like to know the top niches in affiliate marketing now? Can you give me some examples of those niches? I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

    All the best,
    Elaine

  2. Thanks Ford that was really informative ,especially the part about picking a niche you are passionate about ( Rather than what you want to make money from). As the saying goes.. “do what you Love and the money will follow…’ I have always been afraid to pick a niche. But this has really empowered me to informatively choose one now and know whether I can make money from it or not !! ( And also choose a niche I love)
    Thanks so much!!

  3. Hi there,

I like how you break down the process of picking a niche into multiple steps. I can’t agree more that getting a niche that you’re passionate is key to be a successful affiliate marketer, especially when you’re a newbie. Just a question, is there a risk of targeting a niche that’s too specific that there’s little audience to profit from?

    1. Hi! Thanks for appreciating my article! That’s a good question! As affiliate marketer, your number one goal is to drive traffic for your website and to do that, you must ranked first in Google. Here is an idea, Do you want to buy a car that is very common or most of people have those kind of car or would you prefer to buy the limited edition car for you to stand out? I would say that targeting a niche with little audience and competition is much better than choosing a niche with too many competition. If you want to know how to narrow down your niche, Check my review about Keywords. If you still have questions and concerns, feel free to leave them below and i will be happy to help you out. Thanks!
